1st XV v York R.I. (H). LOST 8-21 (h.t. 3-3)
Try: Philpotts (62)
Pen: Scott Smith (10)
Cons:
Att.: 32 (plus some in the bar).
Scoring sequence: (10 minutes) 3-0, (26 mins.) 3-3, (55 mins.) 3-10, (60 mins.) 3-13, (62 mins.) 8-13, (70 mins.) 8-16, (80 mins.) 8-21.
In case you cannot remember, Danny, you were illegally body-checked out of the game early doors. Your players ran themselves to water in a bold attempt to salvage something from today's match against table-toppers, York Railway Institute. York just merited their victory but the scoreboard hardly reflected Mods' full contribution to an absorbing game. York had the territory and the possession but only rarely put our line under serious pressure. Mods had little territory and too often gave away cheap ball. York too squandered a serious amount of possession but they always seemed to have another chance quickly after every error. Each Mods' attempt to find width was smothered by York's well marshalled "pincer" defence, often well into our half of the field. Mods too defended successfully high up the pitch but twice we were fatally punctured.
Mods didn't exactly subject York's tryline to close examination until from nowhere, veteran CROFT zimmered more speedily than advancing years could match into open space beyond the enemy lines, drew the full back before plonking the ball to the supporting PHILPOTTS to score against the right hand upright's protective pad. The straight forward conversion was missed with ease. Nevertheless we drew heart from the try and despite unluckily conceding another try actually finished the game with our best 10 minute period of the match, playing with skill and aggression but without further score. Another defeat but play with the same spirit against the teams around us in the league and safety will be assured.
Interestingly, those teams around us: Castleford, Stocksbridge, Baildon, Skipton and Northallerton ALL have to play us at Cookridge Lane before the end of the season!

2nd XV v York R.I. (A). LOST 15-19

MATCH REPORT BY RICHARD ODDY
Mods opened up the try with a try from myself which was duly converted.
Twinkle toes Blackburn followed this up with a magnificent Mods move and
despite my failure to add two points Mods looked comfy with a 12-0 lead.
However a late first half try from York was followed up by an early second
half try for York (the second of which was converted) to leave the scores at
12 all.

The score remained thus until 8 minutes from the end when Mods were awarded
a penalty deep inside the York half which was converted by myself, 15-12.
With seconds remaining however York surged forward and found their way
through an uncharacteristically weak and tired Mods defence to end the game
19-15 to the good.

All in all a decent performance by the Mods but tiredness in the last ten
minutes plus a hard working York side saw the boys in black and red probably
get less from the game than they deserved.
