THANKS TO ADAM FOR THIS REPORT..............
Despite no less than 8 player changes from the previous weeks win against
Heath the 2nd XV held firm and beat a resurgent Baildon side. Trailing 5-0
through a fortunate kick through by the Baildon stand off the Mods XV
battled hard and stamped their authority on the game through the forwards,
a neat kick to the corner by Mark Gilmore gave Mods the opportunity to
catch and drive a line out through Dan Burgin with Carl Blackburn claiming
the try after some good driving work from the pack, Oddy then failed to add
the extras.
Potts then took the attack to Baildon with some good running from the rucks
and mauls provided by the greatly talented Burgin at 9, following 7 or 8
good phases of play Mods lost the ball but were given a good opportunity to
attack in the 22 when Baildon knocked on, Gray fed Burgin at the base of
the scrum, Burgin held off 2 defenders and managed to off-load the ball to
Carl Blackburn who crashed over for his second of the afternoon, Oddy again
failed with the conversion attempt. Half time 5-10.
The second half saw the Mods XV against the slope and against the wind, the
first 5 minutes were very scrappy with neither side dominating possession
or territory, the Mods backline including the war horse Steve Hanson made
some outstanding tackles to keep Baildon at bay. Mods once again began to
dominate play with good runs coming from Mick Gorman, Rob Potts and Dave
Terrace, Mods got within 20 yards of the Baildon line and were awarded a
penalty due to Baildon infringement - Gilmore added the 3 points to give
the Mods an 8 point lead.
From this point on the Mods never looked back and perhaps should have
scored more points, play was taken to within 10 yards of the Baildon line,
through a powerful run from Mick Gorman, the ruck was cleared and Burgin at
9 picked up the ball from the base, dummied the defence and scampered under
the posts to make the game safe, Gilmore added the extras. This victory
should ensure the Mods 2nd XV are sat at the top of the Yorkshire 3 merit
table and made it 5 wins in a row since New Year.
Selection problems face the Skipper Adam Burgin for the game with Moortown
next week as 8 of the 2nd XV regular players will return from international
duty, weddings and 1st XV promotion.
